An alternative approach to Temporo-mandibular Joint (TMJ) problems



There is a joint where our jawbone connects to the skull. And like any other joint, it may become a source of pain or tenderness. The pain may be worse when chewing, talking or even yawning. Your jaws may get stuck in certain positions or make unusual sounds when opening or closing the mouth or just chewing.

With tempero-mandibular joint (TMJ) problems you may also experience toothache that is not easily resolved (because the pain may not be coming from the tooth).

And very interestingly, there may also be headaches, neck aches, dizziness, earaches, upper shoulder pain, and ringing in the ears. Are some of these symptoms caused by the TMJ dysfunction, or are they the signs of underlying problems that may also be causing the TMJ pain? 

I believe the latter is very often the case.                                       
 
As mentioned above, the jawbone connects to the skull just in front of the ear. However, there are many muscles that connect to the base of the skull – from the neck, shoulder and upper back areas. It is not uncommon for these muscles to be excessively tense and pulling the skull out of proper alignment and placing abnormal strain on the TMJ. Abnormal strain on other joints in the body may lead to degeneration, arthritis and pain especially when the abnormal strain continues over considerable time. It is the same with the TMJ.                     
 
Furthermore, the skull sits on top of the neck and if there are postural problems in this area or poor alignment of the spine, these too, will  place abnormal strain in the area and potentially adversely affecting the TMJ.                                

If you have TMJ problems and also have headaches, neck or shoulder pain or stiffness, there’s a very good chance that properly correcting the spine and the muscles will have a beneficial effect on TMJ problems as well.

Even if you don’t have these other symptoms but have TMJ problems that don’t seem to respond well to other approaches, correcting the spine and muscles may also be of considerable benefit to the TMJ.

It is important to note that posture, the spine and the muscles all need to be corrected together as they affect one another.
